Endangered South African Penguins

Photographing the Endangered South African Penguins

My journey to South Africa culminated at Boulder’s Beach, a photographer’s paradise for those seeking to capture the vibrant spirit of the endangered South African penguins. This location offers a unique opportunity to observe and photograph these charismatic birds in their natural environment.

This time I brought my Canon R1, Canon’s new flagship mirrorless camera along with the lightweight Canon RF 100-500mm lens to capture crisp, detailed images of the penguins engaging in their daily routines – waddling along the shore, playfully splashing in the surf, and preening their feathers. Here are a few images I captured while visiting this colony of penguins –

A History of Decline and Conservation Efforts

The African penguin, once abundant along the South African coast, has sadly experienced a dramatic decline in recent decades. In 2024, the estimated number of African penguin pairs in South Africa is 8,750. This is a 93% decline in population over 70 years.

Overfishing, pollution, and climate change have all contributed to their dwindling numbers. Recognizing the urgent need for conservation, South Africa has implemented various measures to protect these beloved birds.

  • Sanctuaries and Reserves: The establishment of protected areas like Boulder’s Beach has provided safe breeding grounds for the penguins.
  • Habitat Restoration: Efforts are underway to restore and protect penguin nesting sites and foraging areas.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about the threats facing African penguins and the importance of conservation is crucial.
  • Rehabilitation Centers: Injured or orphaned penguins receive care at rehabilitation centers and are released back into the wild when they are healthy enough.

Photographing with Respect of the Wild

While capturing these incredible creatures, it’s crucial to remember to photograph responsibly.

  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Always observe the designated viewing areas and maintain a safe distance from the penguins. This is where a telephoto lens like the Canon RF 100-500 mm is perfect for this shoot.
  • Minimize Disturbance: Avoid using flash photography, as it can stress the birds. Even when they allow swimming closer to the penguins, avoid getting too close to them.
  • Support Conservation Efforts: Consider donating to organizations involved in African penguin conservation. Here’s a link below where you can donate in the conservation efforts for the South African Penguins:

Here are 5 Fun Facts about South African penguins

  • “Fish” by Mistake: Initially classified as fish by Portuguese explorers due to religious dietary restrictions, these flightless birds are highly adapted for their aquatic lifestyle.

  • Underwater Speed Demons: Capable of reaching speeds up to 8 km/h while swimming, they’re incredibly agile hunters in their marine environment.

  • Extreme Dieters: To prepare for their annual molt (shedding of feathers), South African penguins dramatically increase their body weight, then swiftly lose it all within a few short weeks.

  • Unique Fingerprints: Each penguin boasts a distinctive pattern of black spots on its chest, making them as individual as human fingerprints.

  • Partners for Life (Mostly): These penguins typically form strong, lifelong bonds with their mates. Both parents diligently share the responsibilities of incubating eggs and caring for their chicks, showcasing remarkable parental dedication.

As a wildlife photographer, it is crucial to remember our responsibility to these magnificent creatures. Maintaining a respectful distance, minimizing disturbance, and avoiding the use of flash photography are essential ethical considerations. Furthermore, supporting organizations dedicated to African penguin conservation is a vital step in ensuring their long-term survival.

My experience at Boulder’s Beach was a profound reminder of the delicate balance of the natural world and the importance of responsible wildlife photography. By capturing their spirit through our lenses, we can not only share their beauty with the world but also inspire a deeper understanding of their plight and the urgent need for conservation.

Best Travel Pictures of the Year

As 2024 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on an incredible year filled with breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cultures, and all the unforgettable moments that I captured throughout the year. This year has been a whirlwind of travel, allowing me to explore some of the most stunning locations around the globe.

Here’s a recap of my adventures as a travel photographer, highlighting the most memorable experiences that shaped my year. Here I share with you my Best Travel Pictures of the Year.

Starting the Year with the Black Nazarene in the Philippines

In January 2024, I had the most unforgettable experience photographing and navigating through thousands of people during Black Nazarene procession in Manila, Philippines.

This historical event dates back to the 17th century, when a statue of Jesus carrying the cross was brought to the country by Spanish missionaries from Mexico. The Feast of the Black Nazarene commemorates the anniversary of the “Translacion” or the transfer of the image from its original location at a church in modern-day Luneta Park to Quiapo Church in Manila.

Since then, the Black Nazarene has been revered by the Filipinos as a symbol of hope, strength, and perseverance. Every year, millions of devotees gather to participate in the procession, braving the scorching heat and crowded streets some even barefoot, just to catch a glimpse of the revered and miraculous statue.  This procession is a testament to the enduring faith of the Filipino people and serves as a reminder of their rich cultural and religious heritage.

Carnevale di Venezia

As a photographer, capturing the essence of this centuries-old tradition has always been on my bucket list. In February 2024 that dream has become a reality. The vibrant colors, elaborate costumes, and intricate masks of the Venetian Carnival have been preserved and passed down through generations.

According to legend, the Carnival of Venice began after the military victory of the Venetian Republic over the Patriarch of Aquileia in the year 1162. In honour of this victory, the people started to dance and gather wearing masks in St Mark’s Square. Since then this became a yearly tradition.

Being able to document this cultural event and share it with the world is a dream come true.

Zermatt, Switzerland

From the enchanting canals of Venice, we journeyed to the breathtaking landscapes of Switzerland. Our stay at the 3100 Kulmhotel, the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps, was an unforgettable experience. Although altitude sickness posed a challenge, we managed to push through it with a laugh! From our vantage point, we enjoyed an incredible view of the majestic Matterhorn. I even ventured out in the middle of the night for some stunning “Milky Way” photography featuring this iconic peak.

Not far from our location is the charming ski resort town of Zermatt. I eagerly awaited dusk, when the darkness transformed this picturesque town into a magical scene straight out of a storybook.

The Jungles of Costa Rica

Back in March we traveled to the Costa Rican rainforest to explore and photograph wildlife! The amount of wildlife I’ve encountered and photographed have been absolutely incredible. From colorful toucans to funny looking red-eyed frog, to sloths I was constantly in awe of the beauty and diversity of this place. We even drove to the jungles of Osa Peninsula,  the southernmost part of Costa Rica .  National Geographic magazine calls this part of this country  “The most biologically intense place on earth.” Im proud to say I got all of the BIG 4 monkey species native of Costa Rica.

A Glimpse of Istanbul

Istanbul felt like a living history book unfolding before my eyes. The vibrant energy of the historical Grand Bazaar (circa 1455) was a photographer’s dream. The awe-inspiring Hagia Sophia, a masterpiece of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, offered breathtaking backdrops. Everywhere I turned, the unique fusion of East and West, a captivating blend of cultures, presented itself as a photographic opportunity. Even with limited time, I captured the essence of Istanbul – its rich history, dynamic spirit, and enduring beauty. Here are my favorites from this trip..

Italia

Italy has always held a special place in my heart, and this year was no exception. After photographing a destination wedding in the Vatican, we embarked on a journey through history, exploring the rich tapestry of art and culture in cities like Florence and Rome. We then ventured into the dramatic landscapes of the Italian Dolomites, capturing their breathtaking beauty.

The warm, golden light of sunset cast a magical glow on the charming coastal villages of Cinque Terre, creating the perfect backdrop for some of my most cherished photographs. Here are my favorites…

In Memoriam: Grizzly Bear 399, Queen of the Tetons

Something in me yearns to return to Grand Teton and Yellowstone, to once again photograph the legendary Grizzly Bear 399 and her new cub. Dubbed the ‘Queen of Grand Tetons,’ Bear 399, at 28 years old, was the oldest known grizzly bear mother in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to successfully reproduce. Sadly, a few months after I captured these photos I learned that Bear 399 passed away after being struck by a vehicle. Rest in peace, 399. Thank you for gracing us with your presence for so many years and inspiring a deep appreciation for wildlife stewardship and conservation. You will be deeply missed.

Photographing the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

On April 8, 2024, I embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to witness and capture the last total solar eclipse to cross North America until 2045. Tagging along with me is my photographer friend Edwin. Our epic 9-hour road trip spanning 7 States starting from Delaware led us to the charming town of Greenville, Maine – a hidden gem nestled in Piscataquis County with a population of just 1,437 residents.

Originally planning to fly to Texas for clearer skies, a last-minute weather change redirected us to Maine. Despite the unexpected change of plans, we were determined to make the most of this rare phenomenon.

The solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, also known as the Great North American Eclipse, was a breathtaking sight to behold. This total solar eclipse was visible across a band covering parts of North America, from Mexico to Canada, and crossing the contiguous United States. As the moon passed between Earth and the sun, it obscured the sun, creating a magnificent and unforgettable spectacle. I was one of the millions of people along it’s path, who stood in awe bearing witness to a momentous event in history.

With our cameras at the ready, we positioned ourselves on the edge of beautiful Moosehead Lake. I set up my gear on tripods – a Canon R5 with a Canon RF 600mm lens for close-up shots of the eclipse, and a Canon R3 with a Canon RF 15-35mm wide-angle lens to capture the stunning landscape. Equipped with solar filters and glasses, these tools allowed me to capture the eclipse against the backdrop of this small town’s natural beauty.

The Ferrari Museums of Modena and Maranello

The Ferrari Museums of Modena and Maranello

The Ferrari Museums of Modena and Maranello – Visiting the birthplace of Enzo Anselmo Ferrari in Modena, Italy was an amazing experience for me as a race car enthusiast. At 10 years old, Enzo began his journey to becoming the founder of the most successful Formula 1 team and most famous car company of all time.

While on a road trip around Italy, we were able to visit two museums devoted to Ferrari’s legacy. The first one we visited was the Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena, which focused on Enzo’s legacy and racing history. And a few miles away from Modena is the Museo Ferrari Maranello, which showcased the evolution of Ferrari cars, its engines, and technology. Photographing both of the Ferrari Museums of Modena and Maranello was a truly incredible experience and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to learn more about the incredible legacy of Enzo Ferrari.

My Top 15 Favorite Photography Locations in Iceland

Iceland also known as the land of Fire and Ice is a dream destination for any photographer. Especially if you are a landscape photographer, its breathtaking landscapes, gorgeous waterfalls, and unspoiled nature will definitely blow your mind. Not to mention, there’s an active volcanic eruption happening now for everybody to see. So this summer after getting vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine, we decided to pack our bags and passports and flew to Iceland to start a photographic adventure. We dedicated at least 9 days to this trip and drove around Iceland’s famous ring road to photograph the beauty of this amazing country.

As a photographer I found myself amazed by the magnificence of these lands. I felt so overwhelmed with many photo possibilities. I wish I have more than 9 days to explore but we did what we can. Believe me, when I say, Iceland is a one-of-a-kind country that has THE best landscapes that you can ever imagine! My exploration led me to some incredible sites, and that is why today I am sharing with you my top 15 favorite photography locations in Iceland.

Enjoy!

(Above is the original map we used to plan the trip around Iceland’s ring road. If you want to get our FREE detailed itinerary for this adventure, please contact me by clicking on the map).

1. Fagradalsfjall Volcano

Fagradalsfjall is a volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula. After 800 years of being dormant, a volcanic eruption began on March 19, 2021. As of July 4th this year, this volcano is still emitting fresh lava.

This is a highly active erupting volcano that has become one of the most famous photography spots in Iceland, and with a good reason! Who wouldn’t want their photo taken with molten lava as a backdrop! It gives many tourists a rare opportunity to witness this splendor. Just make sure you are at a safe distance. And as a fair warning, based on my personal experience, you will need to hike 2-3 hours from the parking lot. But that is nothing compared to this breathtaking vision that awaits you! I am not an avid hiker but I made it to the highest hills, where the reward was the best vantage point to get the following capture images. I used my Canon 70-200mm with my Canon R5 to capture these images.

2. Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui Waterfalls

Seljalandsfoss is considered Iceland’s most famous waterfall, especially for photography. It is located in the South Region in Iceland right by Route 1. So you can pretty much see the waterfalls from afar as you drive around the ring road. The waterfall drops 60 m and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. The cliff of this waterfalls is believed to have been once part of the coastline of Iceland. If you are a big fan of the reality TV race show, The Amazing Race, it was featured there back in 2004.

Both Seljalandsfos and Gljufrabui waterfalls are within a close range and very impressive. On a bright sunny day, you can even witness a rainbow which would be the crowning jewel of your photo.

Best Seljalandsfoss falls photos in Iceland

Gljufrabui or the “dweller in the gorge” is partly hidden with a mountain but it can be also seen from beneath making for spectacular misty and eerie shots. You can reach this hidden gem by walking less than a mile from Seljalandsfos by following the signs along the walking path.

While photographing both waterfalls, make sure to use a wide angle like a 15-35mm or a 14mm lens. Also do not forget to bring a raincoat for your camera because being close to the waterfalls can get your camera very wet. A micro fiber cloth to wipe off the mist off your camera lens as you shoot will also come in handy.

3. Skogafoss

Ahh, the impressive Skogafoss waterfall. Secretly, I waited for a dragon to fly over me but oh well, next time! Fun fact, this site was used in the Game of Thrones film location for Season 8. When Jon and Daenerys rode the dragons in the first episode of season 8, after flying across wintery landscapes and through a gorge, they landed next to a stunning set of multi-tiered ice-coated waterfalls. You guessed it, it is this waterfall! 60m high and 25m wide, it is truly an impressive sight. No wonder it has been one of the most visited photography locations in Iceland! Such magnificence is more than enough to land you with the perfect photos.

4. Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

This is one of the most impressive canyons in Iceland not only because of its beauty but because it is so wonderfully authentic. The river that flows has made a unique serpent-like path that slithers through the rocky formations. Its origins date back two million years ago during the Ice Age. The canyon was created by progressive erosion by flowing water from glaciers through the rocks. There are so many angles to capture incredible photos here, making the canyon one of the most versatile shooting locations in Iceland!

5. Iceland Glacier

Imagine hiking through glaciers and even finding an Ice Cave! Well, it was one unforgettable experience for me, thanks to the help of the amazing team from Glacier and Volcano Expeditions that organized the hiking tour to the glacier.  We hiked for 4 hours through the ice but the ice cave was definitely a highlight! It was a little challenging when we went cause in the middle of the hike it started falling rain and hail with gusty winds of at least 20 miles per hour but that did not stop us from reaching our goal to find at least one ice cave. This experience was worth every effort. Not only do you get to photograph amazing scenery but you can feel & touch millions of years of Earth’s history!

6. Svartifoss

Yet another waterfall that will leave you completely awe-inspired! What is unique about this one? The way the rocks were formed like crystals, placed perfectly next to the other is quite a sight! Furthermore, it is like an oasis that gives your eyes a rest after the black sand plains. Even though it is smaller than the rest, it is quite an elegant one. The whole scenery is charming and actually romantic which makes it one of the best photography locations in Iceland.

Best time to go is when all the tourists are asleep lol. Luckily we came in June when the sun sets at 11:30 PM, a phenomenon called the “midnight sun”. The place is empty of visitors, there was no one there except us.

7. Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach

Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon in southeastern Iceland and is considered the deepest lake in the country at a depth of 250 meters. It was formed in the 1930s as the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier began to melt. Jökulsárlón lagoon, also called the crown jewel of Iceland, is constantly growing in size as the glacier melts due to global warming.

The best time to photograph here is either during sunset or sunrise. You can capture icebergs as they float around the lagoon. And on the other side, you will find a black volcanic sand beach called Diamond Beach. Here you can photograph diamond-shaped iceberg fragments that drifted along the shore. It is truly an amazing experience!

A little fun fact – Jökulsárlón and Diamond beach were used as film settings for some famous Hollywood movies – A View to a KillDie Another DayLara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Batman Begins.

8. Vestrahorn

Vestrahorn is located on the Stokksnes peninsula on the southeast coast of Iceland. This gorgeous mountain has earned the title ‘most photographed mountain in Iceland. Just having a glimpse of its beauty will amaze any photographer who comes to visit! If you are lucky, you can even get a mirroring effect with the calm seawater, or even better, plan your visit at the perfect time and you will capture the Aurora Borealis above it. Unfortunately, we came during a rainy day during summer and it was very challenging getting a shot without the fog covering the mountains. But waiting for long hours and having a lot of patience could be very rewarding.

9. Dettifoss

The most powerful of them all! Fed by the waters of a glacier river, it has an impressive strength even in the whole of Europe. Amazingly it is 100m wide and 45m high with a torrent that falls like thunder. It is one of the most breathtaking shooting locations in Iceland.

There are two vantage point to photograph this waterfalls, one from the east and the other from the west. The east  is a much harder way to get here due to the gravel road and longer travel time but it is totally worth the drive. We came first in the morning but the sun was too harsh for photos even with ND filters. So went back at sunset time around 11:30 PM, also known as the “midnight sun”.

10. Northern Iceland and Husavik

The charming fishing town of Husavik, situated in the North of Iceland is better known as the Whale Capital. It is a photographers’ dream concerning whales since there live 23 species! The town has its own whale museum that is definitely worth visiting. It has risen to fame after the movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire and Saga; so if you are a fan you can even meet some of the locals that were in the movie! Its unique landscape position has also made this little town one of the most beautiful photography spots in Iceland.

11.  Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell, or ‘Church Mountain’, is one of the most popular landmarks of Iceland, a mountain with a unique shape.  It is located on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It is also considered one of ‘the most photographed mountains in Iceland’, due to its dramatic formation and perfect coastal location.

It is especially glorious when the sun is setting and illuminates only part of the peak with red and golden tones. No wonder it has been the subject of many photographers. The panoramic views are adorned with a smaller waterfall in the foreground.  The best time to come during summer is around 11:30 PM when the “midnight sun” starts to set. I was lucky enough to be the only photographer who was there when I captured these images.

12. Budir Black Church

Located on the south coast of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes peninsula, there’s a village with only a hotel and a tiny black church called the Búðakirkja. This location has been a favorite of many photographers like me. I’ve photographed this black church in many different angles and each angle of composition creates a unique image.

13. Gullfoss

The waterfall has a soft golden glimmer and rainbows! Its name “golden” is derived from those traits, along with a legend that says a farmer threw his gold in the waters a long time ago. It is actually made out of 2 waterfalls from which the taller one is 21m. It is an astonishing sight that makes perfect scenery for taking photos, especially on a sunny day.

14. The Village of Vik and Surrounding areas

Vik is a small seafront village in southern Iceland, located along the main ring road about 100 plus miles from the capital – Reykjavik. This beautiful village is very close to many photo locations such as the Reyniskirkja church, Black Sand Beach, Dyrholaey peninsula, and Reynisfjara Beach. Check out these images below and see how beautiful this part of Iceland is…

Fun fact- Dyrhólaey was used many times as a film location for Game of Thrones. It acts as the beach at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea where Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch arrive by boat in Season 7 – Episode 5 and where they are guarding the Wall.

15. Icelandic Horses

Last but not least at number 15 is not a location but you will see them everywhere when you drive along the ring road of Iceland. The Icelandic Horses are one of the purest breeds of horses in the world. They are the original horses brought by the Vikings in the 9th or 10th centuries. Today,  with a human population of over 350,000, Iceland has 80,000 horses. Which ends up being about 1 horse for every 4 people. They are fun to watch, but please do not pet them or bother their peace.

I hope you loved my selection of my top photography locations in Iceland. If you feel already inspired and planning to visit for an adventure of a lifetime, trust me, wherever you go in Iceland you will be amazed. Not only you will be met by the most beautiful sights you have ever seen, you will also experience the hospitality and friendliness of the people of Iceland.

And as a piece of advice from a fellow photographer to another  – “Take only photographs and Leave only footprints”. Respect Iceland’s nature so to preserve it for the next generation.

Enjoy and always be safe!

Travel Reportage: Good Friday Crucifixions in the Philippines –

I went back to my home country, the Philippines, a week before Easter during what they call the “Holy Week” to document this important tradition that dates back hundreds of years ago.

Penitents in the Philippines emulate the sufferings of Jesus during Holy Week to atone sins or pray for their sick love ones. Some carry crosses and some scourge their wounded backs as they make their procession around their village stopping at each station, where devotees sing the “Pasyón”, the Philippine epic narrative of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

And on Good Friday, in the town of San Pedro Cutud in Pampanga thousands gather to witness nine men as they are crucified to the cross by villagers dressed as Roman Centurions as part of the Holy Friday rituals. Ruben Enaje, 51, who plays “Kristo” is among those nine men. According to Enaje, he started doing this in the early 80s as a thanksgiving to God after surviving a fall from a five-story building. He believes he was given another chance at life by God. Though the Catholic Church discourages this practice, many Filipinos still continue this tradition in many provinces around the country.

Although this practice is being discouraged by the modern Catholic Church, thousands of faithful still continue these traditions in many provinces around the country with the belief that their sins will be forgiven by doing such extreme sacrifices. While some ask for God’s forgiveness for their sins, there are also others who participate in these rituals to fulfill vows (panata), or simply to express gratitude for favors they received from God.

Times Square Pandemic

Welcome Back New York

Back in March 2020 when New York City became the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States, the city was put into lockdown.  The once vibrant and lively city turned off its lights and closed down many of its businesses. The streets were almost empty as the community struggle and do its best to follow guidelines on physical distancing to avoid the spread of the virus. It was the same time of that year that I felt the need to document the streets of New York and capture that particular moment in history when this city was shut down.  It was difficult to watch as the community struggle especially with the death toll rising in record numbers but I admire the resilience of every New Yorker.

A year later, I went back to the same places and stood and photographed at almost the same spots and what I saw was a symbol of HOPE and NEW LIFE. As the vaccination campaign is nearing its completion and businesses are starting to open, the lively crowd is coming back to the city and the colors of Spring are filling every street. These are all good signs that New York City is finally getting back to normal.

Black and white ASSATEAGUE WILD HORSES

Wild Horses of Assateague Island

I finally had the chance to photograph the famous wild horses of Assateague Island in Maryland. I cannot believe I waited more than 10 years before visiting this place. We are only about 2 hours away.

Photographing these wild horses was quite an experience. According to local folklore these horses are descendants of animals that survived a 17th century shipwreck off the coast of Virginia. It is incredible to watch them roam around this tiny island they consider their home for many centuries now.

Hope you enjoy the following photographs. I chose black and white photography to remove the distractions and focus on the beauty of each of these creatures. However, I left one image in color to show how magnificent the sky is during sunset at the island. When you have the chance to travel to the coast of Maryland and Virginia, check out this beautiful island and witness the beauty of its longtime residents – the wild horses of Assateague Island.

Plan your visit by clicking on this LINK and support the preservation of Assateague Island National Seashore.

Mexican Cenotes Underwater Photography

There’s always something mystical about Mexico’s hidden gems – the Cenotes. These freshwater sinkholes, which are connected through underwater caves along the Yucatán Peninsula, were once considered sacred by the ancient Mayans. It has been 10 years since I did an underwater wedding shoot here and the experience was just amazing. It’s great to be back for another shoot…
